Lynn University Course Dedicated to "Caddyshack"

The class of 'Caddyshack'

Reported by USA TODAY

Maybe Mitch Cumstein will go night putting when the professor says class is over.

At Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., students are being offered a course this semester entitled, 'Caddyshack 101: Lessons From The Coolest Sports Movie Ever Made.'

Seriously.

As part of the Dialogues of Innovation curriculum, the course is being taught by Ted Curtis, an assistant professor for sports management at Lynn University. The idea is to use the film as a basis for studying and discussing everything from social-class stereotyping, the growth of betting, the importance of civility and etiquette, the advancement of catchphrases in language and animal rights. Yes, animal rights, seeing as Carl Spackler, played so memorably by Bill Murray, was obsessed with killing a gopher.

Still doubting the truth of all this? This is from the university's website: "From class distinction to civility, gambling to the origins of catch phrases, Cadddyshack provides a clear — if not kooky — lens through which many may view relationships to the community. It may be the funniest, coolest and craziest sports film ever made — and it provides a clear lens through which students can analyze relationships to each other and to the community. The course will examine issues including the dangers of class distinction, the origins of catchphrases in American lexicon and the out of control growth of sports gambling."

Now that's a peach, hun.

While the class might catch everyone outside of Boca Raton off guard, Lynn University is used to taking an innovative approach to sports management education. Last year, there was a course on viewing life through theNew York Yankees. The university has also used the Super Bowl, Final Four, the X Games and other major events as part of the educational process.

"We use this hilarious, crude, wonderful film as a way to get into some very serious discussions," Curtis said in a release. "As university faculty, we always are trying to find new ways to engage and enlighten our students. With this class, we are doing that through one of the most popular sports comedies ever made."

Can't stomach this? Well, have a drink. How about a Fresca?
